Synergy has crowned some of Western Australia’s brightest young minds as winners of the Solar Schools Challenge after a blistering grand final at Murdoch University yesterday.

The sixth-annual Synergy Schools Solar Challenge is an exciting joint initiative between Synergy and the Science Teachers’ Association of WA (STAWA) aimed at inspiring future energy leaders.

Hon. Matthew Swinbourn MLC, Member for East Metropolitan Region and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Energy, was in attendance to see Burrendah Primary School and Kingsway Christian College, who designed and built the fastest solar-powered cars to be named champions following four weeks of competition.

Synergy Chief Executive Officer, David Fyfe, said this year’s Synergy Schools Solar Challenge has helped year 6 and year 8 students to build skills and knowledge in solar energy, battery technology and engineering principles.

“Synergy is committed to building energy education within schools by teaching students about renewable energy in a fun and engaging way,” Mr Fyfe said.

“Over 690 students from more-than 130 schools across regional and metropolitan Western Australia have joined in the fun while learning about virtual power plants, battery technology and electric vehicles.

“I’m excited to see how many potential energy leaders this year’s Synergy Schools Solar Challenge will inspire as we race towards a renewable energy future together.”

The Synergy Schools Solar Challenge forms part of a broader Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program to support and develop Western Australian students, empowering future generations with knowledge and skills they need to drive a more sustainable future.

Hands-on activities and in-class lesson plans developed by Synergy complemented seven events held during the term at two Perth metropolitan locations –including the grand final – and in Albany, Bunbury, Collie, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie, before the grand final at Murdoch University.
