Hack your energy habits with these 5 tips to try this Spring
If you’ve ever taken up meditation, trained for a fun run or learned to play the ukulele, you’ll know that it’s often the tiny daily habits which add up to turn into results. If your goal is to make your home more energy-efficient to reduce your energy use and help to manage your bill, the change of season is a great time to try these simple tips which could help you to save on future electricity bills.
Rethink your second fridge
It might have been a bargain buy online, but did you know that running a second fridge can cost up to $230* a year? If it’s in a shed, outdoor area or a hot garage in summer, it will be working even harder, so try moving it to a more protected space or turn it off altogether.
Spring cleaning around your home
While you’re giving the rest of the house a spring clean, dust the coils on the back of your fridge and check the door seals to help it work more efficiently. It’s also a good idea to give your air-conditioning units and filters a good scrub to keep them working efficiently and reduce energy consumption. Remember to always check your appliance manuals for manufacturer cleaning instructions and recommendations.
Unplug your heater
It’s tempting to heat up your home if the weather is still cool – but even five hours each day could add more than $100* to your electricity bill. Find the most energy-efficient heating you can (look for the energy efficiency star-rating) or unplug it altogether and rug up with blankets and socks.
Light up your energy goals
Lighting can account for up to 11%* of your electricity costs. As the sun starts rising earlier and setting later, find times when you can switch lights off, use more energy-efficient bulbs or simply open the curtains and blinds to let in more natural light.
Get your appliances serviced
Getting your air-conditioning, pool pump or other appliances cleaned and serviced before their busy season approaches could help to maximise their efficiency. Read your appliance manuals for advice on how often you should do this and which professionals you should contact for servicing.
