Innovative minds race to victory at Synergy Schools Solar Challenge

The Synergy Schools Solar Challenge has finished for another year, showcasing the exceptional capabilities of Western Australian students.

Year 6 winners from Burrendah Primary School and Year 8 winners from St Mark's Anglican Community School exhibited outstanding innovation and technical skill, securing their victories at the Grand Final.

Synergy’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Kurt Baker said it was fantastic to see students engaged in this fun learning activity.

“The Synergy Schools Solar Challenge is an outstanding educational program that effectively demonstrates the benefits of solar and battery storage in a practical and engaging manner.

“It is immensely rewarding to observe the students' enthusiasm for energy and STEM subjects.

“The ingenuity displayed by the students in modifying their vehicles, whether through adjusting solar panel angles or switching to battery power during periods of low sunlight, was great to see.”

In 2025, in addition to the competitive race events, participating schools were equipped with car kits and renewable energy activities to support learnings throughout the term.

The 2025 Challenge included seven events held across Perth, Albany, Bunbury, Collie, Geraldton, and Kalgoorlie, with over 920 students participating from across Western Australia.

The Synergy Schools Solar Challenge is a collaborative initiative between Synergy and the Science Teachers’ Association of Western Australia (STAWA).
