Here’s how your energy is helping to power WA’s future.

We all have a role to play as WA’s energy system transitions to a renewable energy future and we’re here to help you understand exactly what the transition means for you. Here, we’ll explore what’s happening with solar energy, how we’re managing it and your role in it all.

If you have solar panels on your rooftop, a home battery system or you’re driving an electric vehicle, you’re already connected to renewable energy – and some exciting possibilities for the future – through these household energy assets.

Even if you don’t have your own household energy assets, if you’re connected to the South West Interconnected System (the SWIS, WA’s main electricity system), you’re connected to renewables. Around 30% of the electricity across the SWIS is generated from renewable energy sources, with more than half from wind farms, followed closely by rooftop solar.

At Synergy, we’re supporting WA's transition to a new energy future powered by more renewables – discover what it means for you.

Your role in WA's energy future

When we say everyone has a role to play, here’s what that means for you:

  • If you can, use as much of the energy generated by your solar PV system as you can during the day:
You might need to buy less from the energy system (historically called the grid), which could translate into savings on your bill. Of course, any changes to your electricity bill will depend on a range of factors, including your particular rooftop solar system and how you use energy at home. When the sun goes down, you'll still need to draw electricity from the energy system, but this can be limited if you have a battery system.
  • You can help to reduce demand for electricity from the SWIS at other times, which can have benefits for everyone.

Changing your behaviour to use your solar energy when the sun is shining involves some simple swaps and changes to your habits and routines. Here are some ideas:

Shift your use

Consider shifting more of your energy use to the daytime. The more solar energy you can use as it's being produced by your system, the better.

Check the weather

Look at the forecast for the week ahead and plan to use appliances such as your washing machine during sunny weather, or in the middle of the day.

Monitor your solar energy production

You may need to stagger the use of your appliances to avoid consuming electricity from the energy system.

Set timers for your appliances

Set timers to run your dishwasher and washing machine during the day to use your solar generation, rather than overnight when you’re drawing electricity from the energy system.

Run your pool pump

Run energy hungry appliances like your pool pump in the middle of the day. Always follow your manufacturer’s recommendations.

Charge your EV during the day

If you have an EV, you could charge it during the day with your solar power.
